BLKMZIC Issue #1: Black Banjo
1/2 sized ⦁ 24 pages
An autoethnomusicology zine by golden, a lil red dirt Southernplayalistik shawty who was at the time living in Oakland and being asked all the time why they would play a "white" instrument. They wrote this commonplace research zine to give the kinfolks an accessible way to frame the origins of this complex and beautiful instrument, beginning with its origin in the Senegambian region. They also wanted folks to understand the roles the recording and broadcast media played in whitewashing an African instrument so thoroughly that a century later, most people thought it was a white instrument. Hannah Mayree, founder of the Black Banjo Reclamation Project, read this zine and sought golden out at Oakland Creates, and the follow-up zine is after years of being in connection.
Diasporan Savant Press, now based out in Portland, OR, creates zines, prints, patches, posters, and more.
